Job site safety: best practices with rental equipment

Renting equipment comes with responsibilities. Here are the essential safety rules to protect your team and the rented tools.

Safety on a job site is an absolute priority, and this applies even more when using rental equipment. Unlike your own gear, you may not know the full history of the machine. Here are the best practices to adopt systematically.

Pre-use inspection

Before starting any rental equipment, take 10 minutes to carry out a complete visual inspection. This step is non-negotiable:

  • Check for cracks, leaks or missing parts
  • Test the safety devices: emergency stop, belt guards, locking mechanisms
  • Read the operating manual provided with the equipment
  • Document any pre-existing damage with timestamped photos before you start

Training and certification

Some equipment requires specific training before use. Never entrust a lifting machine, boom lift or jack hammer to someone who has not received adequate training.

In the event of an accident with an unqualified operator, your civil and criminal liability may be engaged. Make sure every member of your team is certified for the equipment they are operating.

Personal protective equipment (PPE)

PPE must be suited to the equipment being used. Here are the essentials by type of work:

  • Hard hat — mandatory for all demolition work
  • Fall arrest harness — essential for work at height (boom lifts, scaffolding)
  • Hearing protection — required for noisy tools: jack hammer, compressor, saw
  • Gloves and safety glasses — essential for welding and grinding work

Incident reporting

In the event of an incident or damage to the equipment, report it immediately via the Toolsy platform. Do not attempt to repair rented equipment yourself without the owner's explicit agreement — this could worsen the damage and engage your financial liability.

Transparency is always the best approach: an incident reported quickly is far better handled than damage discovered after the fact.
